Why Pre-Arrange

Planning your final arrangements can seem to be a difficult or morbid or depressing task to undertake. But when a death occurs, those left behind most often experience an emotional and stressful period, during which they have the responsibility of remembering or finding information, making decisions, and carrying out these very arrangements. Often confused, grief-stricken, exhausted, and deeply saddened, family members are left with much responsibility.

By planning your final arrangements prior to the time of need, you are providing a written guideline of your personal preferences, eliminating any question as to your personal wishes at a time when your loved ones are faced with making decisions.

The Options

When preparing for final arrangements, many choices are available. You must first determine whether you would like a:

  • traditional funeral
  • traditional funeral with cremation instead of burial
  • direct cremation
  • cremation with a memorial service
  • donation to a medical institution
  • immediate burial
  • or perhaps another personal preference

Funding a pre-arrangement

It is not necessary or a requirement that your pre-arrangement be funded. You do not have to pay anything toward the costs. No downpayments are required. You can pay as much or as little as you would like. However, there are some considerations that might make pre-payments advantageous.

Pre-paying for your arrangements enables you to allay the financial responsibility incumbent on your family at the time of death and can help ensure that your family will carry out your wishes. Pre-paying the arrangements in full can allow you to guarantee the contract, which means that you are paying for the contract at today’s prices and your family or your estate will not owe any additional money at the time of death for the goods and services you have funded, cash advances excepted. Pre-paying can also help reduce your estate for purposes of qualifying for Medicaid, SSI, or other such programs. These programs require you to have a funded irrevocable contract with the funeral home. An irrevocable contract will not allow you to revoke that contract and receive a refund of the funds you have paid toward that contract.

If you pre-pay or fund your arrangements, your funds stay in your name under your Social Security Number until your death.

If you would like further information about pre-arranging, please call Hall-Taylor Funeral Home at 502-633-1655 or 502-477-1655.
